In this second episode of Contiki Egypt & The Nile, we take an overnight train to Aswan, board our cruise ship, and visit an Egyptian souk.
Contiki Egypt & The Nile: Day 3 & 4
The following are notes from my travel journal.
An overnight train is not so good if you want to sleep – but it’s great if you wanna have a good time. We had some drinks, played some games. And I even had a rousing discussion about Canadian identity. Overall, it was a lot of fun but we didn’t get a lot of sleep.
The train stopped in the middle of the night, which delayed our arrival. It wasn’t until we got to Aswan that I dawned on me that we were in Africa. I mean, I knew that geographically we were in Africa but when you think of Egypt, you think of the desert. But rolling in, on one side it was very lush and green, and on the other side, it started to feel like something I hadn’t seen before.
I had never really been interested in the idea of a lazy cruise vacation – until I got to see what it’s like.
They greeted us with hibiscus tea and the rooms were just as big as the hotels I’d usually stay in.
We got to freshen up and then it was time to go for a ride on a felucca. And then we sailed down the Nile and we got to see everything along the way.
We got off the felucca and went to a place that sells Egyptian oils – I went in telling myself I wasn’t going to buy anything but of course I couldn’t resist. It’s all good because some of this stuff you can’t get anywhere else.
We ended the day at an Egyptian souk or market. Bargaining is a huge part of the shopping experience – it can be fun or frustrating depending on how much time you have and how much money you want to spend.
They have a lot of techniques to get you to check out their stuff or stay in their shop. I’ve had to deal with this in Asia so this wasn’t anything new. Beware the pickpockets!
So once again we just had a packed day. And we ended it with some entertainment on board. I had to get to bed right after because we had a 4am wakeup call.
