In SLEEPING AROUND, TRAVEL

Looking the perfect place to relax and get some sun? Today we’re heading to Kona Kai Resort & Spa, a beautiful & luxurious spot to treat yourself on vacation in San Diego.

Part of the Noble House Hotels & Resorts family, Kona Kai is an upscale tropical style resort and spa located on Shelter Island in San Diego.

The property underwent an extensive $22-million renovation which was completed in 2015, and every space feels clean and new. The lobby is bright and airy, and the staff were very friendly, making a great first impression. Both valet and self-parking options are available on site.

Each of the rooms feature Polynesian-inspired decor and bath products. I love the scent of mango & coconut – it’s fresh, and will make you feel like you’re in a tropical destination (and with that San Diego sunshine and climate, you may as well be). Each room has a balcony that offers spectacular views of the bay, gardens, or marina.

This place has everything: there’s a spa, fitness centre, hot tub, pool, tiki bar, private cabanas, and even a private beach looking out onto the Kona Kai Marina and Point Loma hillside. The Kona Kai Marina even specializes in accommodating large boats, and there is more than 55,000 square feet of indoor & outdoor meeting space, making it an ideal location for retreats and weddings.

We had dinner at the on-site restaurant, Vessel Restaurant & Bar, which serves New American cuisine, incorporating local, seasonal & sustainable ingredients. And my favourite: seafood. They offer menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and even a Happy Hour and daily specials. The seared diver scallops and lobster sliders were instant favourites, though everything on the menu was fresh and flavourful. Vessel is above and beyond your average hotel restaurant. The food and service here are spectacular, and the resort offers some unreal views.

Kona Kai is paradise. From the views and bright colours right down to the fresh scents, it feels like a tropical retreat – even though it’s just a short drive from the airport and the Gaslamp Quarter downtown district of San Diego. With its clean and spacious rooms, on-site amenities (restaurant and spa!), private beach, and proximity to the city, it’s the perfect getaway for couples or a group of friends, and we can’t wait to come back.
